Goalieinfo.net - Washing Equipment

Your equipment is much more comfortable if you allow it to thoroughly dry between uses. Equipment should be air dried at room temperature. DO NOT use heat to dry your equipment as you can cause damage to the surface and internal padding which can cause irritation and excelerated wear.

Chest and Arm Protectors, Pants - They should be hand washed in cold water with a mild detergent. DO NOT submerge any of these items completely in water. Bacteria and mildew can form from the areas that do not dry properly. Shrinkage can also occur if items are completely submerged. A washing machine is not recommended as the water and the rotation can cause premature separation of coatings on external materials. Never use fabric softener on your equipment for the same reason. You can treat your chest & arm and pants with a spray type of waterproofing, such as Scotchguard. This will also help keep unit cleaner longer. Any kind of treatment that is being applied should be tested on a small area for compatibility before use. Some commercial equipment, that is designed for the cleaning of sports equipment, is available.

Catch gloves and blockers - Clean with a damp warm rag, wiping both the interior and exterior. Gloves need to be air dried. You can treat the gloves with a spray, such as Lysol or a waterproofing spray to help eliminate smell from bacterial growth.

Goal pads - Cleaned with a damp warm rag. Allow them to dry thoroughly between uses. The bottom areas of a pad are subject to a great deal of abrasion so you should always inspect the toe attaching hardware on your pads. Removing the attaching screws periodically and putting a small amount of oil will prevent them from rusting. Always keep spare toe assemblies and hardware on hand in case of emergencies. Treating the exterior with a waterproofing agent, such as Scotchguard will extend the life of your pads. Scotchguard helps repel water off the pads and speeds up the drying process.
